Returns & Exchanges
Effective date: 30 September 2026
At DEBUT, operated by Hartzenberg Ventures trading as DEBUT, we want every customer to feel confident in their order and in the service they receive.
Because many DEBUT orders involve a customer supplying their own rugby jersey for us to professionally alter and rework into a selected DEBUT silhouette, our returns and refund process differs from that of a conventional clothing retailer.
This Returns, Refunds & Exchanges Policy explains how cancellations, returns, exchanges, refunds, customised garments, customer-supplied jerseys, damaged items and service-related concerns are handled when ordering through https://debut-cpt.com.
Nothing in this policy is intended to limit any rights available to consumers under applicable South African law, including the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 (“CPA”) and the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002 (“ECTA”).
1. How DEBUT Orders Work
For our custom reworking service, the customer:
-
Selects a DEBUT style or silhouette.
-
Places and pays for the order.
-
Sends or delivers their own rugby jersey to DEBUT.
-
DEBUT reworks the customer’s jersey into the selected silhouette.
-
The completed garment is returned to the customer.
Because the customer’s own garment is physically cut, sewn, adjusted and permanently altered as part of this service, a completed custom order generally cannot simply be returned to its original condition or exchanged for another garment.
Different rules therefore apply to customised orders and ordinary non-custom products.
2. Cancelling an Order Before Alterations Begin
If you change your mind after placing an order, please contact DEBUT as soon as possible.
If your jersey has not yet been altered and work has not begun, we will assess the cancellation according to:
-
The stage your order has reached;
-
Whether your jersey has already been received;
-
Whether any costs have already reasonably been incurred;
-
Your rights under applicable consumer law.
Where a statutory cooling-off or cancellation right applies, DEBUT will honour that right.
If your jersey has already been sent to DEBUT and an order is cancelled before alteration begins, any cost associated with returning the jersey may be for the customer’s account where permitted by law.
3. Online Shopping Cooling-Off Rights
Where section 44 of ECTA applies to an electronic transaction, a consumer may cancel an eligible transaction without reason and without penalty within the statutory cooling-off period.
For goods, this is generally seven days after receipt of the goods.
For services, this is generally seven days after conclusion of the agreement.
Where this statutory right applies, the consumer may generally only be charged the direct cost of returning goods, and any qualifying payment must be refunded within the period prescribed by law.
However, ECTA contains exceptions to this cooling-off right.
These exceptions may include:
-
Goods made to a customer’s specifications;
-
Clearly personalised goods; and
-
Services that have begun with the customer’s consent before the end of the applicable cooling-off period.
These exceptions are particularly relevant to DEBUT’s customised jersey alteration service.
4. Customer-Supplied Jerseys and Custom Alterations
DEBUT specialises in altering and reworking jerseys according to a customer’s selected style, silhouette and, where applicable, sizing requirements.
Custom work may include:
-
Cutting;
-
Cropping;
-
Gathering;
-
Waist alterations;
-
Reshaping;
-
Tailoring;
-
Stitching;
-
Elasticated or fitted sections;
-
Adjustments according to selected measurements;
-
Other permanent modifications required to create the selected DEBUT silhouette.
Once alteration of your jersey has begun, the garment may no longer be capable of being restored to its original form.
For this reason, change-of-mind returns, ordinary exchanges and cancellations will generally not be available once custom work has commenced, except where required by applicable law.
This does not affect your rights where DEBUT’s workmanship is defective, the service has not been performed as agreed, or another statutory consumer right applies.
5. Customer Approval Before Customisation
By sending your jersey to DEBUT for alteration and proceeding with your selected order, you authorise DEBUT to make the alterations reasonably necessary to create the style you selected.
Customers should therefore check all relevant information before their jersey is altered, including:
-
Selected style or silhouette;
-
Size;
-
Measurements where requested;
-
Product description;
-
Fit information;
-
Any special instructions submitted to DEBUT.
If you notice an error in your order details, please contact us as soon as possible at debutcpt@gmail.com or 064 674 5868.
We cannot guarantee that instructions can be changed once production has begun.
6. Incorrect Measurements or Customer Instructions
Where DEBUT performs an alteration according to measurements, sizing information or specific instructions supplied by the customer, the customer is responsible for ensuring that the information supplied is accurate.
If an issue results primarily from incorrect measurements or instructions supplied by the customer, any additional alteration may be subject to:
-
Assessment by DEBUT;
-
Whether a further alteration is technically possible;
-
Additional alteration costs; and
-
Additional courier or delivery costs.
Where DEBUT has failed to follow the agreed measurements or instructions correctly, the matter will instead be treated as a workmanship or service-quality issue.
7. Fit Adjustments
Because DEBUT garments are individually reworked, fit may differ from a standard rugby jersey.
Customers should review any available sizing, measurement and fit information carefully before placing an order.
If you believe the completed garment does not correspond with the style, size or measurements agreed with DEBUT, please contact us as soon as reasonably possible.
We may request:
-
Your order number;
-
Photographs of the garment;
-
Relevant measurements;
-
A description of the fit issue; and
-
Any measurements or instructions originally supplied.
Where the issue results from DEBUT’s workmanship or failure to follow the agreed specification, we will address it in accordance with applicable consumer law.
Where a further adjustment is requested purely because the customer would prefer a different fit from the one originally selected or instructed, additional alteration and courier costs may apply.
8. Exchanges of Customised Jerseys
Because the original jersey belongs to the customer and is individually altered, a customised DEBUT jersey cannot ordinarily be exchanged in the same way as a mass-produced clothing item.
For example, after your jersey has been permanently reworked, you generally cannot exchange it for another size simply because you would now prefer a different fit.
Where technically possible, DEBUT may instead offer an additional adjustment.
Whether an additional adjustment is possible will depend on:
-
The existing garment;
-
The alterations already performed;
-
Available fabric and seam allowance;
-
The type of change requested; and
-
Whether further alteration could reasonably damage the garment.
Additional charges may apply where the adjustment is not required because of an error by DEBUT.
9. Standard, Non-Custom Products
If DEBUT offers a standard product that has not been customised, personalised or altered specifically for you, you may request a voluntary return within:
14 days of receiving your order.
To qualify for our voluntary return policy, the product should generally be:
-
Unworn, other than reasonably necessary to assess fit;
-
Unwashed;
-
Unaltered after delivery;
-
Free from marks, stains, make-up, self-tan or fragrances;
-
Undamaged;
-
Returned with original tags where applicable; and
-
Returned with any original packaging supplied.
All returns are subject to inspection.
This voluntary return policy does not replace any statutory rights you may have.
10. Standard Product Exchanges
For eligible non-custom products, you may request an exchange within 14 days of receiving your order.
Exchanges are subject to:
-
The product meeting our return conditions;
-
The replacement being available;
-
Any applicable price difference; and
-
Any applicable delivery charges.
We cannot guarantee that another size, colour or product will remain available while your return is in transit.
If a replacement is unavailable, we may offer another suitable product, an agreed store credit, or a refund where applicable.
11. Quality of DEBUT’s Alteration Service
DEBUT takes the quality of its alteration work seriously.
Under applicable South African consumer law, consumers are entitled to services performed in a timely manner and to a standard and quality that consumers are generally entitled to expect.
If you believe DEBUT’s alteration service has not been performed to the agreed standard, please contact us with:
-
Your full name;
-
Order number;
-
Description of the concern;
-
Clear photographs or video where appropriate; and
-
Any relevant measurements or instructions.
Where the service has not been performed to the standard required by applicable law, appropriate remedies may include correcting the workmanship or providing an appropriate refund or other remedy as required by law.
12. Customer-Supplied Property
When you supply your own jersey to DEBUT, it remains your property.
DEBUT will take reasonable care of customer-supplied garments while they are in our possession.
The very purpose of our service requires the jersey to be physically altered, so changes reasonably necessary to perform the alteration you ordered do not constitute damage merely because the jersey cannot later be restored to its original state.
However, damage that falls outside the agreed alteration or results from substandard workmanship will be assessed separately in accordance with applicable consumer law.
13. Existing Damage and Condition of Customer Jerseys
Customers should ensure that jerseys sent to DEBUT are suitable for alteration.
We recommend checking your jersey before sending it for:
-
Tears;
-
Holes;
-
Weak seams;
-
Damaged fabric;
-
Stains;
-
Previous alterations;
-
Peeling prints or badges;
-
Fabric deterioration; and
-
Any other existing damage.
Where practical, customers should photograph the jersey before handing it over or sending it to DEBUT.
If we identify an issue that may materially affect our ability to perform the requested alteration, we may contact you before proceeding.
DEBUT is not responsible for pre-existing defects or deterioration that were already present in the garment, except where applicable law provides otherwise.
14. Vintage, Signed or High-Value Jerseys
Customers should carefully consider whether a jersey has unusual financial, sentimental, collectible or historical value before submitting it for permanent alteration.
Customisation necessarily involves cutting and permanently modifying the jersey.
If a jersey is particularly valuable or irreplaceable, please inform DEBUT before sending it so that we can determine whether we are able to accept the garment for alteration.
15. Normal Characteristics of Reworked Garments
Every jersey is different.
Fabric type, construction, original jersey size, graphics, seams and other characteristics may affect the finished result.
Minor differences may therefore exist between completed garments, including slight variations in:
-
Gathering;
-
Stitch placement;
-
Shape;
-
Waist detailing;
-
Pattern or graphic positioning;
-
Cropping;
-
Finishing; and
-
Overall drape.
Reasonable variations that naturally arise from individually reworking different garments will not necessarily constitute a defect.
This does not exclude genuine workmanship defects or other rights protected by law.
16. Incorrect Orders or Errors by DEBUT
If DEBUT makes an error with your order, please contact us as soon as reasonably possible.
Examples may include:
-
Performing a different alteration from the one ordered;
-
Failing to follow agreed instructions;
-
Sending the completed jersey to the wrong customer;
-
Supplying the wrong additional product; or
-
Making another material error in fulfilling the agreed order.
Where the error is ours, DEBUT will arrange an appropriate resolution and will bear return or redelivery costs where required.
17. Orders Damaged in Transit
If your completed garment arrives damaged after delivery, please contact us as soon as reasonably possible.
Please provide photographs showing:
-
The garment;
-
The damaged area;
-
The parcel or packaging;
-
The courier label; and
-
Any visible damage to the packaging.
Please retain the packaging until we have responded, as it may be required for a courier investigation or claim.
Responsibility for loss or damage during transport may depend on the circumstances, including who arranged the courier and the applicable consumer-law requirements.
18. Defective Goods
Where DEBUT supplies goods in addition to the custom alteration service, statutory rights relating to defective or unsafe goods remain applicable.
Under section 56 of the CPA, qualifying goods that fail to satisfy applicable quality standards may generally be returned within six months after delivery, subject to the requirements of the Act.
Where section 56 applies, the consumer may have the right to direct the supplier to repair or replace the qualifying goods or refund the purchase price.
A defect claim is separate from an ordinary change-of-mind return.
19. Sale and Promotional Orders
A discount or promotional price does not remove statutory consumer rights.
If a standard non-custom item is sold on sale, it may still qualify for our voluntary return policy unless clearly stated otherwise.
Customised products remain subject to the customised-order provisions of this policy regardless of whether a promotional price was used.
Any term such as Final Sale applies only to voluntary change-of-mind rights to the extent permitted by law and does not remove statutory rights relating to defective, unsafe or non-compliant goods or services.
20. Return and Courier Costs
For an ordinary voluntary return or exchange of an eligible standard product that is not caused by an error or defect on DEBUT’s part, the customer is responsible for the cost of returning the item unless otherwise stated.
Where a valid ECTA cooling-off right applies, the direct cost of returning the relevant goods may generally be for the consumer’s account.
Where DEBUT is responsible for an incorrect, defective or otherwise non-compliant product or service and applicable law requires DEBUT to bear the cost, DEBUT will do so.
21. Original Delivery Charges
Whether original delivery charges are refundable depends on:
-
Why the order is being returned or cancelled;
-
Whether the product was customised;
-
Whether the return is voluntary; and
-
Any statutory rights that apply.
Where a full refund is required by law, the refund will be processed in accordance with those requirements.
For voluntary returns that fall outside statutory cancellation rights, original delivery or courier charges may be non-refundable where permitted by law.
22. How to Request a Return, Refund or Adjustment
Please contact DEBUT before sending anything back.
Email: debutcpt@gmail.com
WhatsApp / Telephone: 064 674 5868
Please provide:
-
Your full name;
-
Order number;
-
The product or service concerned;
-
A description of the issue;
-
Whether you are requesting a return, adjustment, cancellation or refund; and
-
Photographs where the garment is damaged or you are raising a workmanship concern.
We will review the request and provide the relevant next steps.
23. Do Not Send Returns Without Notification
Please do not send a garment or return parcel to DEBUT without first contacting us.
This enables us to:
-
Identify your order;
-
Record your request;
-
Confirm whether the item needs to be returned;
-
Provide the correct return instructions;
-
Provide the appropriate return address; and
-
Process the matter efficiently.
The applicable return address will be provided directly once your return or alteration request has been authorised.
The business address shown elsewhere on our website should not automatically be treated as a return or walk-in address unless DEBUT specifically confirms this.
24. Packaging Your Return
If you are instructed to return an item, please package it securely.
We recommend:
-
Using suitable protective packaging;
-
Keeping proof of shipment;
-
Using a trackable courier service; and
-
Keeping your tracking number until the matter has been resolved.
Where the customer arranges the return courier, responsibility for a parcel that is lost or damaged before reaching DEBUT will be determined according to the circumstances and applicable law.
25. Inspection
When a returned garment reaches DEBUT, we may inspect:
-
The garment’s condition;
-
The alteration or workmanship complained of;
-
Signs of wear or damage;
-
Any existing or subsequent alterations;
-
Measurements where relevant;
-
The original order details; and
-
The stated reason for the return.
We may contact you if further information is required.
26. Refunds
Where a refund is approved or legally required, it will ordinarily be returned to the original payment method, unless another lawful arrangement is agreed.
Where the payment was processed through an online payment provider such as Paystack, DEBUT may process the refund through the applicable payment channel.
Once DEBUT has processed a refund, the time required for the funds to reflect may depend on the customer’s:
-
Bank;
-
Card issuer;
-
Payment provider; and
-
Original payment method.
Statutory refunds will be processed within the periods required by applicable law.
Where a customer validly cancels under ECTA’s seven-day cooling-off provision, the legislation requires the qualifying refund to be made within 30 days of cancellation.
27. Refunds After Custom Work Has Begun
A customer is not automatically entitled to a change-of-mind refund simply because they no longer want the customised style after DEBUT has begun permanently altering their jersey.
However, customised status does not remove statutory rights relating to defective workmanship, failure to perform the agreed service or other rights provided by applicable law.
Each such matter will be assessed according to:
-
The work requested;
-
The work performed;
-
The extent of completion;
-
The nature of the complaint; and
-
Applicable consumer law.
28. Processing Times
After DEBUT receives all information and, where necessary, the returned garment, please allow approximately:
3–7 business days
for us to inspect and process the request.
More complex workmanship or courier-related matters may require additional investigation.
This is an operational estimate and does not override any deadline imposed by applicable law.
29. Consumer Rights Take Priority
This policy explains how DEBUT administers cancellations, custom orders, returns, refunds and exchanges.
Nothing in this policy is intended to:
-
Waive a consumer’s statutory rights;
-
Avoid an obligation imposed on DEBUT by law;
-
Prevent a customer from exercising a lawful remedy;
-
Exclude liability that cannot lawfully be excluded; or
-
Limit rights relating to defective, unsafe or non-compliant goods or services.
If any provision of this policy conflicts with a mandatory requirement of South African consumer law, the applicable law will take priority.
